"Earthing" / "Grounding" yourself for Wellbeing in Style, Comfort & Safely.
There is a lot of concern about the amount of “charge”, electrostatic or otherwise, that we collect & store on our bodies, and the negative effects that it has on us.
"Earthing" / "Grounding" the human body is a proven method of discharging any retained charge to "Earth" / "Ground" … the trick is to do it safely, effectively & comfortably.
You do not have to use "Conductive" materials in order to connect to "Earth" / "Ground", in fact, as good as it can be, it can sometimes present the risk of electrocution.
"Dissipative" materials can generally offer a perfectly good connection to "Earth" / "Ground", but without the same risk as "Conductive" materials ... let me explain ...
The amount electrical resistance in a circuit will make the difference between a safe & a risky connection to "Earth" / "Ground":
1 Meg Ohm (Ω) / 1,000,000 Ohms (Ω) / 106 Ohms (Ω) is the standard electrical resistance value - as used in Industry - that will protect someone from a single phase (<250 Volt) electric shock.
So by using either a “Dissipative” material, i.e. having an electrical resistance of between 1 Meg Ohm < 1Gig Ohm (1000 Meg Ohm), you current limit the electrical charge, thereby preventing a dangerous electric shock.
Another way of adding protection is by inserting a 1 Meg Ohm Resistor into the circuit, between you & the "Earth" / "Ground" connection point.
There are various ways in which you can effectively connect to "Earth" / "Ground":
- Wrist, Leg or Body Straps – direct skin contact to a band / strap connected to "Earth" / "Ground" via a 1 Meg Ohm Resistor
- Foot Straps – fitted to the outside of a shoe, with a conductive ribbon (Silver coated nylon mono-filament) that fits inside your sock or sits under your foot & a conductive rubber strap either under your heel or ball of the foot. In order to be effective, these foot straps need to be used in conjunction with a “Conductive or Dissipative” floor mat.
- Clogs, Shoes & Boots – special Dissipative soled footwear that has a mixture of properties …
♦“Antistatic” (minimal generation / retention of a static charge)
♦“Dissipative” (conducts a charge, but has a safety resistance of over 1 Meg Ohm)
Again, to obtain the best solution, walking directly on the ground or on materials that can be "Earthed" / "Grounded", e.g. “Conductive” or “Dissipative” flooring / matting that is in turn connected to "Earth" / "Ground".
- Laying or resting on a “Conductive” or “Dissipative” sheet or mat - special mats that are connected to "Earth" / "Ground" via at least a 1 Meg Ohm resistor.

NOTE: It is important to check the safety / condition of your mains power socket before plugging in any earthing equipment.
